Coordinate turns a familiar physical map into a shared, programmable data surface, allowing groups to explore location-based information together through augmented reality overlays.

Introduction: From Static Maps to Shared Spatial Data

Maps make scale, proximity, and geographic relationships legible, but conventional physical maps cannot host rich interactive data and screen-based maps constrain a group to a small display. Coordinate combines both strengths, placing responsive digital information directly over a shared physical map.

System Architecture: Spreadsheet-Programmable AR

Coordinate prioritizes authoring simplicity: users upload a spreadsheet to program the content of map overlays rather than building a custom visualization application. The framework then binds the data to geographic locations and presents it through phones, tablets, or headsets.

Collaborative Analysis: Seeing Data Together

Multiple participants can simultaneously inspect and discuss one coordinated AR scene while moving around the same map. This shared spatial reference supports collaborative interpretation of local partnerships, urban planning data, housing, crime, job growth, and other location-based evidence.

Project Team

Coordinate was developed by students from the Immersive Creation Studio at Arizona State University’s Learning Futures Collaboratory. The KER DRD Animation and Data Visualization Team included Joseph Choi (data visuals), Anthony Delphy (UI/UX), Jacob Farabee (backend), Brooke Hamlin and Jody Lu (modeling and animation), Olivia Hernández (narration), Gina Di Maria (storyboard and video editing), Bharghav Rapolu (project management), and Aira San Agustin (AR development), with Robert LiKamWa as executive producer.
